The Indian Embassy in New York has conveyed deep sorrow regarding the incident and stated that an investigation is underway to determine the cause of Shreyas Reddy Beniger’s demise.
A 19-year-old student of Indian origin, Shreyas Reddy Beniger, was discovered deceased in the US on Thursday, marking the fourth such incident this year and the third within a week. Shreyas was enrolled at the Linder School of Business in Ohio. According to officials speaking to NDTV, Shreyas’ parents reside in Hyderabad, although he held an American passport. Authorities have confirmed that foul play or the potential for a hate crime has been dismissed in this case.
The Indian Consulate in New York has expressed deep sorrow and stated that an investigation is ongoing to determine the circumstances surrounding Beniger’s death.
“Profoundly saddened by the tragic passing of Mr. Shreyas Reddy Benigeri, a student of Indian descent in Ohio. Police investigation is currently underway. There is no suspicion of foul play at this juncture. The Consulate remains in constant communication with the family, offering them all available support,” the Indian Consulate in New York shared on X (formerly known as Twitter).
Earlier this week, Neel Acharya, a student at Purdue University, was discovered deceased. Acharya had been reported missing by his mother on Sunday. Shortly thereafter, a body was found on the university campus, identified as Acharya.
His mother Gaury had reached out for assistance in locating him through a social media post. According to her, the last known sighting of him was by an Uber driver who dropped him off at the campus.
In another tragic incident, Vivek Saini, a resident of Haryana’s Panchkula, was fatally assaulted by a homeless man in Lithonia, Georgia, on January 16th.
Vivek Saini, who was pursuing an MBA degree in Lithonia, Georgia, worked part-time at a convenience store where a homeless man named Julian Faulkner sought refuge. Saini was known to have offered the man chips, water, and even a jacket on occasion. On January 16th, the 25-year-old reportedly declined to provide Faulkner with free food, leading to a frenzied attack; the assailant struck the student approximately 50 times, as stated by the police.
Furthermore, another Indian student, Akul Dhawan, was discovered deceased outside the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) in January.
The autopsy of the 18-year-old indicated that he succumbed to hypothermia.
Nevertheless, Dhawan’s parents have lodged a complaint, alleging negligence and inaction on the part of the university’s police department after Akul Dhawan was reported missing. “It’s bewildering that a young person who was merely a minute away, just around the corner, was found dead, frozen to death,” remarked his father Ish Dhawan.
The United States hosts over 300,000 Indian students. In the past two years alone, 200,000 students have been granted US visas, with a significant surge following the Covid pandemic.
