Actor Sharmin Segal, under scrutiny for her portrayal of Alamzeb in Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar, has spoken out amid the criticism. In an interview with News18, Sharmin suggested that people often “fixate on the negatives,” speculating that perhaps discussing positives isn’t as intriguing.
Sharmin shared her perspective on the criticism, stating, “I had given my all to Alamzeb’s character. We tend to fixate on the negatives but there are so many positives that have also come along, which we don’t talk about. It’s perhaps not interesting enough to talk about positives and we tend to look over them to some degree. There was a point when I was not looking at many things [reviews] but then slowly, I realised that I was also missing out on a lot of love that I was getting. I’ve now started paying attention to that. Over the last few days, I decided to look through it all.”
Sharmin also emphasized the significance of “constructive criticism,” mentioning, “I saw positivity, constructive criticism, and a whole range of feedback, and that’s what happens when you put yourself out there as an artist or an actor. It was actually quite nice to hear all sides of things. It’s an inevitability. Opinions shape you as an actor and a human being. These are actual humans responding to you and it makes you realize how many people you can reach. These opinions are very important.”

Sharmin has faced criticism for her acting performance in the web series, which was directed by her uncle, Sanjay Leela Bhansali. Additionally, she has been scrutinized for what some perceive as rude behavior and comments directed towards her Heeramandi co-stars during interviews.
“Heeramandi” features a star-studded cast including Manisha Koirala, Sonakshi Sinha, Aditi Rao Hydari, Sanjeeda Sheikh, Richa Chadha, Fardeen Khan, Taha Shah Badussha, Shekhar Suman, Adhyayan Suman, Farida Jalal, and Indresh Malik. Set in pre-partition India, the series explores the lives of courtesans who held significant power and influence during the country’s struggle for independence. Recently, Netflix confirmed a second season of Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s “Heeramandi.”
