Kangana Ranaut’s directorial Emergency is scheduled to hit theaters on September 6, 2024. The film, which depicts the Emergency period imposed by former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, features Kangana in the role of Gandhi.
Kangana Ranaut’s upcoming directorial Emergency is set to release next month, but it has already faced controversy. The Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) has called for a ban on the film. Kangana plays former Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi in the movie, and SGPC President Harjinder Singh Dhami has criticized it for depicting Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale—declared a community martyr by Akal Takht Sahib—in a negative light. Dhami has also urged the government to take legal action against Kangana for allegedly inciting religious sentiments among Sikhs.

Faridkot MP Sarabjeet Singh Khalsa, son of Indira Gandhi’s assassin Beant Singh, has also called for a ban on Kangana’s film, alleging that Sikhs are portrayed inaccurately.
Bathinda MP Harsimrat Kaur Badal has suggested that the film Emergency should be reviewed by the SGPC before its global release. In a media interaction in Amritsar, Harsimrat stated, “I haven’t seen the film, but if any party was at the forefront of the struggle during the Emergency, it was the Shiromani Akali Dal. The late Parkash Singh Badal led the movement and was arrested along with others.”
“The Akali Dal was at the forefront during the Emergency and faced numerous arrests. If Sikhs are not portrayed accurately in the film, it might be because Kangana’s role prevents a fair depiction of Sikhs. History shows Kangana has used derogatory language against Punjabis, particularly during the farmers’ protests, which suggests her bias,” she added.
The film Emergency is centered on the Emergency period imposed by former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, with Kangana Ranaut not only starring in the lead role but also directing the film. Alongside Kangana, the cast includes Shreyas Talpade, Anupam Kher, and Milind Soman. Kangana’s most recent film was Tejas.
