Jet Airways Founder Naresh Goyal Despairs: “Preferable to Die in Jail”

Jet Airways Founder Naresh Goyal Pleads for Release Amidst Health and Personal Struggles

In a Mumbai special court hearing, Naresh Goyal, the founder of Jet Airways, who is currently in judicial custody for an alleged Rs 538 crore fraud case, appealed for bail, expressing a grim outlook on his life. Goyal, arrested by the Enforcement Directorate in September 2023, presented a poignant picture of his deteriorating physical health and personal challenges.

During the court proceedings, Goyal, with folded hands and evident physical tremors, conveyed that he has “lost every hope of life” and stated that he would prefer “dying in jail” rather than continuing to live in his present condition. Goyal emphasized the precarious state of his health, highlighting swollen and painful knees that hinder his ability to fold his legs. The court observed his trembling body and acknowledged his need for assistance even to stand.

Goyal disclosed the critical health condition of his wife, Anita, who is battling cancer and is bedridden, along with the unwell state of their only daughter. Expressing concern over the limitations of jail staff in aiding him, Goyal requested not to be sent to J J Hospital, opting instead to “die in jail,” citing the troublesome journey and follow-ups.

The septuagenarian businessman expressed dissatisfaction with the medical facilities available to him in jail, noting long queues and delays in reaching doctors. He asserted that his health prevents him from personally attending court sessions, leading him to reconsider insisting on physical appearances in the future.

The court assured Goyal that he would not be left helpless and committed to providing proper care for his mental and physical health. The judge directed Goyal’s lawyers to take appropriate steps concerning his health.

Goyal’s bail application, filed in December of the previous year, cited multiple health conditions, including heart issues, prostrate problems, and orthopedic issues. He claimed there were reasonable grounds to believe he was not guilty. The next hearing for Goyal’s bail plea is scheduled for January 16 before special judge M G Deshpande. The ED case against Goyal, his wife, and former Jet Airways executives is based on a CBI FIR alleging a Rs 538 crore fraud at Canara Bank.
