“On Friday, the Delhi High Court ordered the transfer of the investigation into the deaths of three students at Rau’s IAS Study Circle in Old Rajinder Nagar from the city police to the Central Bureau of Investigation.”
“On August 5, the Supreme Court took suo motu notice of the drowning incident that occurred last month in the basement of Rau’s Study Circle building in Delhi’s Old Rajinder Nagar, where three civil services aspirants lost their lives. The Court also issued notices to the Central and Delhi governments regarding the matter.”
A bench of Justices Surya Kant and Ujjal Bhuyan remarked that the recent incident in the national capital served as a wake-up call for everyone.
The bench stated, “These coaching centres have become death traps. They should either comply fully with safety and basic living standards or operate online. These institutions are jeopardizing the lives of aspirants who come from various parts of the country.”
On Friday, the Delhi High Court transferred the investigation into the deaths of three students at Rau’s IAS Study Circle in Old Rajinder Nagar from the city police to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to ensure public confidence in the inquiry.
The deceased were Shreya Yadav (25) from Uttar Pradesh, Tanya Soni (25) from Telangana, and Nevin Delvin (24) from Kerala.
The Delhi Police has arrested seven individuals in connection with the deaths of the three UPSC aspirants.
On Monday, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi sealed the basements and other areas of several coaching centres found to be in violation of regulations. To date, the civic body has taken action against 19 centres, including Rau’s IAS Study Circle, where the three aspirants drowned.
Additionally, the Union Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has established a probe committee to investigate the causes of the incident, determine responsibility, and recommend policy changes.
