In a candid interview, Ranbir Kapoor opened up about his challenging relationship with his late father, Rishi Kapoor. Despite their differences, Ranbir recognized his father’s love and the emotional journey they experienced together. He also mentioned that his wife, Alia Bhatt, is his best friend.
Ranbir Kapoor recently discussed his complicated relationship with his late father, Rishi Kapoor, in an interview with Nikhil Kamath on his YouTube channel. He shared that, despite their privileged upbringing, there was always a distance between him and his father.
Reflecting on his childhood, Ranbir recalled sitting on the staircase of their bungalow, listening to his parents argue. He said, “My parents fought a lot. We lived in a bungalow, so I spent much of my childhood on the staircases, hearing them argue. I was always scared and on edge.”
Ranbir admitted that he was afraid of his father and never saw the color of his eyes. He also revealed that when he returned to India, Rishi Kapoor took away his car to keep him grounded.
Ranbir described his father as a short-tempered but good man who loved his family, work, food, and alcohol. “He was very open and always spoke his mind,” Ranbir said.
He admitted that his father’s volatile temperament always frightened him. “He never shouted at us or raised his hand, but his volatile nature was intimidating,” the ‘Animal’ actor shared.
Ranbir also mentioned that his parents eventually worked through their differences when Rishi was diagnosed with cancer, witnessing the selfless care his mother provided for his father.
Ranbir believes that men of his father’s generation were afraid of vulnerability and didn’t openly express their love. “I think that generation of men feared vulnerability. My father never expressed his love to me or held my hand. Even when he hugged me, it felt more like a pat than a real embrace. Maybe I’m blaming his generation, but he was very distant. Despite this, I knew he loved and cared for me deeply, but there was always a distance,” Ranbir said.
In the same interview, Ranbir talked about how Alia has changed for him. “She has changed more for me than I have for her. I acknowledge this and realize I need to change a bit too,” he admitted.
Describing Alia as his best friend, the ‘Brahmastra’ actor shared, “Watching movies, laughing, and chatting together—that’s what romance is. I’m lucky to have married someone who is also my closest friend. We can chat, laugh, and share everything like best friends. Alia is a wonderful person, very colorful, and even though she is 11 years younger than me, it’s very funny.”
Ranbir was last seen in Sandeep Reddy Vanga’s ‘Animal,’ one of the biggest films of 2023. His next appearance will be in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s ‘Love and War,’ where he will star alongside Vicky Kaushal and Alia Bhatt.
