Kolkata Knight Riders mentor Gautam Gambhir has offered some ‘serious’ guidance to his players ahead of the upcoming season of the Indian Premier League. Gambhir, who led KKR to two titles during his time as captain, emphasized that the IPL isn’t about Bollywood or glamour, but rather an arena for players to showcase their skills in one of the toughest leagues globally.
KKR, who clinched their last IPL title back in 2014, enlisted Gambhir as their mentor following his departure from Lucknow Super Giants, marking a return to Kolkata after two years with the latter team. Gambhir joined other KKR members at the IPL 2024 players’ auction, where the franchise made headlines by spending a record-breaking INR 24.75 crore to acquire Mitchell Starc.
Gambhir emphasized from the outset that IPL is serious cricket for him. He stressed that it’s not about Bollywood, personal agendas, or post-match celebrations. Instead, it’s about stepping onto the field and engaging in competitive cricket. He believes this is what makes the IPL the toughest league globally, as it prioritizes the essence of the sport.

KKR stands as the third franchise, following Chennai Super Kings and Mumbai Indians, to secure multiple IPL titles. However, recent seasons have seen them struggle, finishing in the seventh spot and missing out on the playoffs.
Gambhir also acknowledged the unwavering support of Kolkata’s passionate fanbase, particularly during challenging times.
“I believe Kolkata boasts some of the most dedicated fans in the league. It’s important for us to be transparent with them and strive to bring joy to their faces. Kolkata fans have endured hardships, especially in the initial three years of the IPL,” Gambhir stated.
The two-time IPL-winning captain emphasized that players shouldn’t get distracted by off-field activities but should focus on ways to guide the team to another title.

“Undoubtedly, it was a team with significant visibility. However, my belief has always been that glamour isn’t the priority. It’s our performance on the cricket field that truly counts. KKR shouldn’t be recognized for off-field engagements but for our on-field achievements,” the KKR mentor concluded
