Disaster management teams in Assam are staying alert because the Remal effect is expected to continue until June 1.

Despite the relief brought by rainfall since Sunday night from the scorching temperatures of the past four days, the meteorological warning of extremely heavy rainfall prompted the governments of Assam, Tripura, and Meghalaya to issue alerts and implement precautionary measures to prevent any unfortunate incidents.

Until June 1, Kamrup Metropolitan district, including Guwahati, has activated all government response agencies and departments due to the Met office’s heavy rainfall warning on Monday and Tuesday, attributed to Cyclone Remal. The disaster management branch of Kamrup Metro has instructed various departments like Guwahati Municipal Corporation, health, PHE, PWD, veterinary, and water resources to remain on alert. They are directed to ensure immediate response and continuity of essential services in light of the weather conditions influenced by Cyclone Remal, which made landfall on Sunday night between Bengal’s coastal area and Bangladesh.

On Sunday, the ASDMA issued an Orange Alert for eleven districts and a Red Alert for seven districts in Assam. Despite the rainfall since Sunday night bringing relief from the scorching temperatures of the past four days, the meteorological warning of extremely heavy rainfall prompted governments in Assam, Tripura, and Meghalaya to issue alerts and implement precautionary measures to prevent any unfortunate incidents.

Meghalaya’s Ri Bhoi and East Khasi Hills districts have decided to shut down all schools, both government and private, on Tuesday due to unfavorable weather conditions.

In precautionary measures, the disaster management division of Kamrup Metro district advised the Guwahati Municipal Corporation and its various branches to remain vigilant for immediate response and to ensure essential services continue smoothly.

The DDMA has halted ferry services and fishing activities in the Brahmaputra and its tributaries for two days starting Monday. Circle officers, with the assistance of local police stations, are conducting awareness campaigns about landslide risks in vulnerable areas, considering that the capital is surrounded by 18 hills.

All revenue circle officers were instructed to promptly convene circle-level task force meetings to ensure preparedness of line departments for effective responses when needed. They were also directed to identify required relief camps and prepare them for immediate sheltering of affected individuals.

Furthermore, district DTOs were instructed to keep recovery vans, excavators, and cranes ready, while DFOs were tasked with preparing tree-cutting teams to clear uprooted trees resulting from the storm. Additionally, NDRF/SDRF teams were put on standby for any emergencies.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma reassured readiness of the government to handle situations triggered by Remal in a tweet on Sunday night.
