Saif Ali Khan Attack: Was the Accused a Bangladeshi National-Level Wrestling Champion?

Bollywood star Saif Ali Khan suffered critical injuries in a stabbing incident during an attempted robbery at his Bandra residence on January 16.

On January 16, Bollywood star Saif Ali Khan was severely injured in a stabbing incident during an attempted robbery at his Bandra residence. He sustained multiple stab wounds, including serious injuries to his neck and shoulder, and is now recovering after undergoing a five-hour surgery at Lilavati Hospital.

Mumbai police apprehended the prime suspect, Mohammed Shehzad, in Thane on January 19. In a surprising revelation, authorities identified Shehzad as a former national-level wrestler from Bangladesh. Allegedly entering India illegally, he had been living under the alias Vijay Das to evade detection. His wrestling background is thought to have contributed to his ability to overpower Saif Ali Khan and others present during the attack.

After the incident, Shehzad allegedly moved between Bandra, Dadar, Worli, Andheri, and Thane to evade capture, eventually seeking refuge in a labor camp in Thane. During interrogation, he admitted to his wrestling career in Bangladesh, adding an unexpected twist to the case. Investigators believe his physical strength, developed through years of wrestling, significantly contributed to the assault.

This is not Shehzad’s first encounter with the law. Earlier, while employed in Worli, he was accused of stealing a diamond ring and subsequently dismissed. He later worked briefly at a Thane restaurant until December 2024 before turning to criminal activities.

The defense lawyer has disputed claims about Shehzad’s nationality, stating that he has lived in Mumbai with his family for over seven years. This contradicts police reports alleging he entered India illegally from Bangladesh and assumed a false identity.

Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar commented on the incident, noting that the accused was apparently unaware he had broken into the home of a prominent Bollywood actor. The attack occurred around 2:30 a.m. on January 16.

Saif Ali Khan’s condition is stable despite the severity of his injuries. During a lengthy surgery, surgeons successfully removed a 2.5-inch blade fragment lodged in his spine. The actor remains under observation as the police investigate the incident and Shehzad’s background further.
