On Tuesday, August 20, 2024, the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM), Congress, and Rashtriya Janata Dal announced their support for the Bharat Bandh called by various organizations on Wednesday, August 21, 2024, in response to the Supreme Court’s recent ruling on Scheduled Caste (SC) reservations. Left parties have also endorsed the strike.
Dalit and Adivasi organizations in Kerala have called for a hartal on August 21 in protest against the Supreme Court’s verdict on reservations. The National Confederation of Dalit and Adivasi Organisations (NACDAOR) has opposed the recent judgment by a seven-judge bench, which they argue undermines the earlier decision of a nine-judge bench in the landmark Indira Sawhney case that established the framework for reservations in India.
On Wednesday, the Bahujan Samaj Party also lent its support to the Bharat Bandh, accusing the BJP and Congress of conspiring to dismantle reservations. The party emphasized that these political entities must recognize the importance of reservations and refrain from tampering with them.
The JMM has instructed its leaders, district presidents, secretaries, and district coordinators to actively participate in the 14-hour nationwide strike and show their support.

“The recent Supreme Court verdict on Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe reservations will hinder the progress and empowerment of SC/ST communities,” stated JMM General Secretary Vinod Kumar Pandey.
RJD State General Secretary and Media In-charge Kailash Yadav announced that the party has decided to support and participate in the day-long strike.
State Congress spokesperson Rakesh Sinha also confirmed that the party has extended its support to the bandh call.
