The incident came to light on January 30 when the Neb Sarai police station received a PCR call reporting a woman being assaulted by her husband.
Upon arrival, a police team rescued the woman and promptly took her to AIIMS for medical attention. She had about 20 visible injuries on her body upon admission, officials confirmed. She has since been discharged.
According to a senior police officer, when questioned, the victim revealed that she originated from Darjeeling, West Bengal, and had met the accused over the phone. She had befriended Paras and had been in contact with him for the past 3-4 months, the officer added.
The woman was initially planning to reach Bengaluru in early January for a housemaid job opportunity, as informed by the officer.
However, since her train route included a stop in Delhi, she decided to visit Paras, who then suggested she stay longer and offered to assist her in finding employment. Trusting his promises, she stayed with him in a rented place in Raju Park, the officer elaborated.
As time went on, the accused allegedly began physically assaulting her and subjected her to sexual abuse for a week, according to the victim’s statement relayed by the officer.
In one instance, Paras purportedly poured hot lentils over her, causing burn injuries, the officer added.
Following the woman’s complaint, the police filed an FIR on January 30 under sections 323 (voluntarily causing hurt), 376 (rape), and 377 (sodomy) of the Indian Penal Code, and arrested the accused on February 2, the officer continued.
Paras, originally from Uttarakhand, was employed as a cook at a local eatery, according to police sources.
The investigation into the matter is ongoing, they concluded.
