Protest by Maratha Quota Leader Concludes After Maharashtra Government Agrees to Demands.

Manoj Jarange Patil’s requests during the Maratha Quota agitation encompassed the issuance of Kunbi certificates for all individuals within the Maratha community and the provision of free education from kindergarten to postgraduate levels.

The leader of the Maratha quota protest, Manoj Jarange Patil, concluded his hunger strike today as the Maharashtra government acceded to all his demands. Patil had been fasting in Mumbai since yesterday, advocating for educational and job reservations for the Maratha community under the Other Backward Classes (OBC) category.

Among Patil’s requests were the issuance of Kunbi certificates for all Marathas, free education from kindergarten to postgraduate levels, and reserved seats for Marathas in government job recruitments.

He noted that 37 lakh Kunbi certificates have already been distributed, with the number expected to reach 50 lakh. “Kunbi” refers to the Other Backward Classes (OBC).

The 40-year-old had warned of leading a large-scale protest to Mumbai’s Azad Maidan if their demands were not addressed. Mr. Patil had stated, “If the government does not comply, we will demonstrate the extent of our capabilities.”

According to the protesters, two Maharashtra ministers held a meeting with Mr. Patil on Friday night, and the government has now approved all of their demands.

Chief Minister Eknath Shinde is scheduled to visit the demonstration site and hold a meeting with Manoj Patil at 9 am today.

The Maratha leader has organized a triumphant procession scheduled for later today in Vashi.

The issue of reservation for the Maratha community has been a central topic in the ongoing discussions between community leaders and the state government.

On May 5, 2021, the Supreme Court invalidated the reservations for the Maratha community in colleges, higher educational institutions, and jobs. The court emphasized that there was no legitimate basis to exceed the 50 per cent reservation limit while granting reservation for the Maratha community.
