The occurrence occurred during a SpiceJet flight from Mumbai to Bengaluru. The toilet door’s lock malfunctioned, and the passenger had to be rescued after breaking open the door.
On a Mumbai-Bengaluru SpiceJet flight, a male passenger found himself stuck in the aircraft’s toilet for over an hour due to a malfunctioning door lock. The situation was resolved after the flight landed at Kempegowda International Airport (KIA), and engineers broke open the door to rescue the passenger.
SpiceJet confirmed the incident, expressing apologies for the inconvenience caused, and announced a full refund for the affected passenger. According to KIA sources, the incident occurred on Flight SG-268 departing from Mumbai at 2 am on Tuesday. Shortly after takeoff, a passenger in seat 14D attempted to exit the toilet but was unable to do so as the door malfunctioned. Despite efforts from the crew and fellow passengers, they couldn’t open the door from the outside.
As the passenger grew anxious, the flight crew slipped a note under the door, reassuring him. The note stated, “Sir, we made every effort to open the door but were unsuccessful. Please don’t panic. We’ll be landing shortly, so close the toilet lid, sit on it, and secure yourself. Once the main door is open, an engineer will assist you.”
The crew advised the passenger to sit on the commode and securing himself ahead of landing by slipping in a note.
The plane landed in Bengaluru around 3:42 am, and engineers entered to break open the door, saving the trapped passenger.
“On January 16, a passenger unfortunately became trapped in the restroom for about an hour on a SpiceJet flight from Mumbai to Bengaluru due to a malfunctioning door lock while the aircraft was in the air. Our crew assisted and guided the passenger throughout the journey. Upon landing, an engineer opened the restroom door, and the passenger received immediate medical assistance,” stated SpiceJet in a release. The airline expressed regret and apologized for the inconvenience, assuring a full refund for the affected passenger.
